Monfalcone
Wednesday, April 25th, 2007I’ve recently been exploring the hillsides of Monfalcone with my friend Jeanette and she and I have discovered an amazing historical site. There are miles and miles (kilometers and kilometers) of trenches that were built by the Austrians/Italians during WWI. I’m somewhat embarrassed to say that I had no idea that these hills that I live near were literally the front line of WWI between Austria and Italy. The trenches were initially built by the Austrians as they invaded Italy and then where maintained by the Italians as the Italians fought back. As I have been trekking through these woods I was reading Paris 1919 by Margaret MacMillan and have been utterly overwhelmed by the sense of history surrounding me. I will continue to explore this area and update with pictures of the trenches and intricate natural cave system that the troops were able to utilize.
