All for the Search of Sushi

Monday, December 4th, 2006

The last weekend my mum was visiting we decided to do a road trip into Austria.  About two hours north of Monfalcone, through the Dolomites is a small resort town by the name of Klagenfurt.  Klagenfurt boasts, amazing spas, great golf and SUSHI.  Mum, Hoss and our friend Tim were all in for the adventure!

The day in Italy started off overcast and as we drove the two hours north through mountain tunnels, every time we came out of a tunnel the clouds cleared a little more and a little more so that by the time we reached the Austrian boarder it was a bright sunny day!

As you know Hoss and I have great luck with mapquest in Europe so our driving directions got us to the town centre of Klagenfurt and after a few wrong turns, asking for directions at a gas station and a butcher shop, we finally found our hotel, The Hotel Geyer.  The hotel was about a 2 minute walk to the town centre and the annual Christmas Festival was on.

After we checked into the hotel we began our quest for the Sushi restaurant, which we couldn’t find but ended up having a wonderful ‘Austrianesque’ lunch with lots of German Beer mmmm.  After lunch mum and I hit H&M … need I say more?  We walked around the town square and through the Christmas market.

We headed back to the hotel where I enjoyed a luxurious bubble bath.  After our afternoon naps we were totally excited to head out for our Sushi dinner. After walking around around and around we finally gave up and had a glorious meal at the Sandwith Hotel.  The food and company was both divine.  As much as my mum begged to go to the local disco to dance off our dinner we decided to call it a night and all headed back to our rooms to watch some good German Television. The next morning my mum arose early and went for a short walk around the hotel after making a right out of the hotel door and a left onto the first street she crossed; a little further down on the left was the sushi restaurant which of course was NOT open on Sunday.  As disappointed as we all were that there was no sushi, we now know it’s only a two hour drive away. Sunday Morning we headed back out of town and decided to drive down to Lake Worthersee. The lake was still covered in morning mist and there were a few rowers out on the lake, a site to behold.  As the cool morning air burned off and the temperature rose we took a short walk around the top end of the lake and ended up sitting outside on a patio in Late November in the Alps sipping cappuccinos.

We were unable to have lunch around the lake so we jumped in the car and started driving back towards Italy knowing we could stop somewhere along the way.  The plan was good in theory but bad in execution.  We ended up in Villach having schnitzel at the equivalent of the McDonalds’of Schnitzel Houses.

After lunch we headed south back to Italy and as we drove through the mountain tunnels the sky clouded over again as if closing the book on our storybook weekend.

Thanks to Hoss for doing all the driving, although how could he complain when he got to do an average speed of 160 km/h.

Thanks to Tim for switching hotel rooms so I could have a bath.  I do owe you a real turkey dinner.

Thanks to mum for being our tour guide and German translator … She was in her Glory!
